In May 2006, we began working with other nonprofit organizations in greater Minnesota to promote the civic engagement of refugees, as part of an effort sponsored by the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits. We and our partners train volunteers who register new voters and teach newcomers about their rights. We were involved in efforts to get out the vote for the November 2006 election. The educational aspect of our project will be ongoing. In 2007, we will continue efforts to educate refugees on voter registration and on other ways they can be engaged in their communities and communicate with their representatives. Furthermore, with the assistance of grants from the Otto-Bremer Foundation we have been able to conduct substantial outreach through print and electronic media. SASSO has been a frequent sponsor and co-sponsor of events aimed at the main stream community to bridge the gap of cultural understanding.
